The Big Lemon Bus

What is it?

The Big Lemon operate a free shuttle bus service for University of Brighton students, connecting the campuses of Falmer, Varley Park, Moulsecoomb and Grande Parade, which can be large distances apart, meaning walking is not feasible. Their mission "is to enable everyone to get around their community in an affordable, environmentally-sustainable way"

What does it do?

It was the first bus company in the UK to run its whole fleet on 100% recycled cooking oil. In 2016, it drove almost as far as the moon and saved over 220 tonnes of CO2 from entering the atmosphere. In 2017, a new solar-powered bus launched and is awaiting formal clearance to operate as a passenger-carrying vehicle.

How does it relate to Environmental Citizenship?

The Big Lemon bus service relates to environmental citizenship as it attempts to minimise the fossil fuels and CO2 brought into the atmosphere and promote to students the importance of sustainable transport. This scheme adds to the sustainable development goal of creating a sustainable city and community positively effects responsible consumption and production as the demand for fossil fuels is decreased.
