The Real Junk Food Project

Volunteers serving food at Hollingdean Community Centre

What it is- The Real Junk Food Project is a national and international movement of cafes, projects and pop-ups with one core objective: To intercept food waste destined for land fill and use it to feed people who need it, on a ‘pay as you feel’ basis.

What it does- The project works by bringing two problems together; combating the issue of food waste and helping to end world hunger by feeding homeless and hungry people in the community. Customers are given the option to pay if they can afford to. This gives those unable to pay a sense of dignity as they don't feel ashamed for taking a free meal.

Suggestions for the community- Brighton residents donate spare food to the project daily. That alongside the monetary donations from customers are used to prepare the meals. Locals are encouraged to donate what they can and those who can afford it are not pestered into more and more donations. There are lots of opportunity for volunteering I this project. There is a need for cafe volunteers to help perform tasks like: Food prep and cooking, Food service, Stock room organising, Cafe set-up and Packing down and washing up. Drivers are also needed to help collect and deliver food to those less mobile.
