Preston Park Velodrome

Preston Park Velodrome is the oldest cycle track in the country. Located in the north east corner of the park, it’s a great opportunity for cyclists in a unique track racing experience.

There are scheduled works for the drome in 2016 including safety works. The total cost of the works is £160,000. This is a combination of a £110,000 grant award from British Cycling, with the remaining £50,000 coming from section 106 funding contributions from planning applications. The site will be fully operational, by spring 2016. There are exciting races taking place every Wednesday evening from April to August, riders of all ages and abilities are invited to take part. As well as this use of the track is free through-out the day, but also available for hire for an event or for a season via the attached PDF.

How does this contribute to environmental citizenship?

This encourages the community to participate in sport, therefore inspiring a healthy lifestyle even if this isn't in the form of cycling. This is particularly important in due to influencing young people. The weekly events provide a social venue that brings everyone together. This is also an environmentally friendly activity as apart from the construction of the site no greenhouse gases are emitted. In theory, it should encourage the community to travel by bicycle around the city. Showing environmental citizenship as residents are actively helping the environment by reducing their carbon footprint.
